Arena Replay: A tool to replay Arena standings in real-time

ChessTournamentLichessSoftware Development
Ever wished you could rewatch the drama of an Arena as it happened?

There is nothing quite like watching a thrilling Arena tournament unfold live. Those of us who were here since the early days of Titled Arena remember the greatest comeback of all time. Magnus being 30 points behind Andrew Tang with half an hour left in the tournament. The only way of overtaking Andrew Tang was getting on a streak and winning 19 games in a row. So he did.

These are the kind of moments you only get with the Arena format. It’s all happening live, in real-time, and the leaderboard shifta quickly. To bring back the feeling of following an Arena live, and inspired by the animated graphs Lichess has posted on YouTube after past Titled Arenas, I built Arena Replay.

What is Arena Replay?

Arena Replay shows the top 10 leaderboard evolving from start to finish, at speeds from 30x to 480x. Use it to rewatch Arenas you’ve played in yourself. How close were you to the top? What was your peak rank? How long did you hold it before someone overtook you? Instead of just seeing the final standings, you can replay, pause, and zoom in on the full timeline. You can also use it to revisit classic tournaments like the Titled Arenas, and track a specific player’s standing throughout the tournament.

You have full control over what to show in the leaderboard replay: streak icons, game results, berserks, a crown icon that shows for how long someone kept #1, and game count. It also works for team tournaments, where you can choose whether to view individual or team standings.

Try it out

Give it a try at https://www.assios.no/arena, and tell me what you think. I'm still working on it, so if you have ideas or feedback, I'd love to hear it.
